Pick up almost any yoga mat and it will be black. Ours isn't, and that's the whole point.
Tea-coloured, not black
The base of every Dara Mat is natural rubber, tapped from rubber trees. Left alone, natural rubber isn't black. It's a warm tea colour — amber, slightly uneven, the colour of the material itself.
Almost every mat on the market is black. Black is not what rubber looks like. It's what rubber looks like after dyes and carbon fillers have been added to it — the same approach that gives tyres their colour. It's cheap, it's uniform, and it hides inconsistencies in the raw material.
We don't add any of it. What you stand on is the rubber, undyed.
Why it matters underfoot
- Nothing added for looks. No dyes, no pigments, no carbon fillers. The colour you see is the material.
- No PVC, no plastic. PVC mats are cheaper to make and they feel it — they go slippery the moment you start to sweat, and they flake as they age.
- It smells like rubber, not chemicals. A new Dara Mat has a faint natural rubber scent that fades. It doesn't have the plastic off-gassing smell you get from a new PVC mat.
- It grips because of the surface, not a coating. The microsuede top absorbs moisture and grips harder the more you sweat.

Being straight with you
Two things worth knowing before you buy, because we'd rather you heard them from us.
The colour varies slightly. Undyed natural rubber isn't perfectly uniform from batch to batch — that's what happens when nothing is added to standardise it. Your mat may be a shade lighter or deeper than the one photographed.
Natural rubber contains latex proteins. If you have a latex allergy, natural rubber mats — ours included — are not the right choice for you. Please get in touch before ordering if you're unsure.
The rest of the mat
- Microsuede top surface. Soft underfoot, and it absorbs sweat rather than sitting on top of it.
- Studio mats: 180 × 63.5 cm, 3.5 mm thick, 2.7 kg. Wider than the 61 cm industry standard.
- Travel mats: the same 180 × 63.5 cm, 1.5 mm thick, 1 kg. Full size, folds flat into hand luggage.
- Free carry strap with every mat, which doubles as a yoga strap.
- Machine washable. Gentle quick cycle, no detergent, spin, hang to dry. Never tumble dry.
